Reducing CO2 through forestation - Forestation Program

NEC Forest

Global warming is an extremely serious problem that affects not only human beings but also the entire planet. Tree-planting is one of the ways to stem global warming because, through their growth process, trees absorb CO2, which is a major contributor to global warming. So NEC began a forestation program on Kangaroo Island in Australia in 2002. We intend to plant an average of 300 hectares(750 acres) of forests every year until 2011, and to maintain these forests for 10 years after that. In this way, the volume of CO2 absorbed could reach 1 million tons in 20 years.

Afforestation program

NEC employees can participate in a forestation program by taking part in an Eco Tour. Twenty-one people from eight families participated in the 5th annual Eco Tour in late August. They went all the way to Kangaroo Island, Australia, from Japan and planted 305 trees in total. This means that they contributed to reducing 122 tons of CO2 over the next 20 years, which easily surpasses the tour's carbon footprint of two tons of CO2 emissions.

ecotonoha campaign site

Anyone can participatein NEC's forestation program without going to the location through our "ecotonoha"campaign. For every 100 messages sent to our ecotonoha website, we add one new tree to our forestation plans. In 2006, the website received 107,054 messages. This represented 1,070 trees, which were included in our forestation plans for 2007.
Since the ecotonoha campaign began in 2003, a total of 323,459 messages have been received, resulting in 3,234 new trees being planted. NEC is working to reduce society's environmental burden through all of our IT-related business activities. And we are undertaking environmental protection activities on a global scale. We will continue to contribute to a rich and sustainable society through technologies that are in harmony with the environment. And forestation is just one example.
